Kennies History

It all started around 1937 when Kennie Laughlin went to work for Marco Vucovich Radio (refrigeration was a side line at that time). Because it was during the depression years and money was tight, Kennie received an interest in the company in lieu of a paycheck. Marco and Kennie worked as partners in downtown Hanford until 1954 when the partnership dissolved.

New Laws, Higher Prices

On July 1, 2014, new California State mandated Title 24 Code Requirements went into effect. This means new code requirements for the heating and cooling industry. We have additional testing with new systems that include fan watt draw and fan flow requirements. With these new testing requirements, equipment selection will be more important and will require higher efficiencies to meet the standards and pass the necessary tests. Along with equipment selection, the existing duct system in a house may have to be improved to pass the new testing as well. On January 1, 2015, new Federal Regional Standards for Heating and Cooling Products will increase the minimum efficiencies from our current minimum 13 SEER to 14 SEER. All of these new regulations add to the bottom line, both in labor cost and equipment cost, for a homeowner who just wants to replace their system.

Typical Directions for Changing Thermostat Batteries

(Not all thermostats have replaceable batteries.)

  1. Turn the thermostat to the “Off” position.
  2. Make sure the fan is set to “Auto”
  3. Depending on the thermostat, remove the cover for the batteries, or remove the faceplate, or remove the entire thermostat from the base.
  4. Replace the batteries.
  5. Reverse whatever action you took on step 3.
  6. Turn the thermostat back on by setting it to “Cool” or “Heat” and adjusting the temperature accordingly.

R-22 Refrigerant: Supply Decreases, Demand Increases, and the Price Goes Up!

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports R-22 refrigerant depletes the ozone layer.  Therefore, R-22 (Freon) is being phased out.  The EPA has reduced the production of R-22 refrigerant for 2013.  By 2015, production will be almost completely banned.

The price of R-22 refrigerant has increased drastically, and will continue to rise.  The availability of R-22 refrigerant will decrease until eventually contractors will not have it in inventory.

If you have an existing R-22 heat pump or air conditioning system, take care of it by having it serviced regularly.

 

 

Comparing Apples to Apples

The average heating and cooling unit runs 3000 or more hours each year in the Central Valley.  By comparison, a car traveling only 35 m.p.h. would travel more than 100,000 miles!  If you serviced your car every 5000 miles, you would service it 20 times or more a year.  When you see this, servicing a heating and cooling unit twice per year is very reasonable.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD SPOT

We would like to inform our customers of an ongoing, industry-wide problem. Units are developing leaks in the evaporator coils. This is not a problem with a single manufacturer; it is with all manufacturers (including after-market coils). It is happening in both package units and splits systems.  Many of the units are developing leaks when the units are between two and four years old.  The manufacturers are aware of the problem, and have given many reasons ranging from formicary corrosion to bad copper from China, etc.  They are all assuring us that they are working on solving the problem.  Some manufacturers have switched to tin plated coils, aluminum coils, or micro channel coils.

Manufacturers will usually warranty the coil itself under their parts warranty if it is within their terms (usually 5 years).  This does not include the labor to replace the coil (approx. 10 man hours), the freight to get the part, the dryer, or the refrigerant. 

We warranty our labor on our unit installations for one year.  Within the first year of using the unit, any problems with our work should come to light so we can take care of it and make it right.  We want to do quality work, and we absolutely want to correct any problems arising from our installation.

When we determine that a unit we have installed has a leaking evaporator coil, we will need to charge the system with refrigerant, in which the homeowner is responsible to us for that invoice if beyond our one year warranty. We then order the coil (if the homeowner so chooses).  Once it arrives, we schedule the replacement.  A normal coil replacement takes 10 man hours, a filter dryer, and 8-15 lbs. of refrigerant.
